It will be seen that, under the dollar

arrangement, the salaries of officers in this Department were on

a regularly progressive scale, thus:-

Assistant Engineers.

.$2,400 - $8,000.

Junior Executive Engineers Senior

3,000 3,600.

4,200 - 4,800.

Assistant Director of Public

4,800 - 5,400,

The following statement shows the above

amounts converted into sterling at 3/- to the dollar, (the rate

at which dollar salaries are paid), and, for purposes of compari-

son, the sterling salaries fixed under the Sterling Scheme:-

It will be seen that, whilst the salaries

of the two Junior Grades have been improved under the Sterling

Scheme, those of the two Senior Grades have been seriously

diminished.

In view of the improvement made in the

salaries of the junior grades and in salaries of officers under

other Departments the Assistant Medical Officers of Health

and Assistant Surgeons, whose maximum salaries were fixed at

$4,200, having been given a Sterling maximum of £720 I submit

Mr. Jones' application for favourable consideration. As set

forth in his letter, under the present arrangement, he is at a

serious disadvantage compared with officers junior to him, a position of affairs which can scarcely be in the interests of
